The fiercest rivalry in Australian cricket has a new prize.
The Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades today unveiled the Melbourne Mace: a trophy to be contested across all WBBL and BBL Melbourne Derby matches, cementing one of the game’s most enduring rivalries with a symbol designed for the city it represents.
Standing solely at 1.4 metres tall, the Mace simply cannot be missed.
Its plinth will light up in the winner’s colours, while the interchangeable head is set to celebrate the city’s champion in real time.
And the presentation is just as special.
The Mace will be immediately run onto the field by a Melbourne icon and handed to the player who hits the winning run or takes the winning wicket.
Fresh off a Player of the Match performance in his side’s season opener last night, Stars captain Marcus Stoinis was in attendance at Fitzroy Town Hall, alongside Renegades captain Will Sutherland and Lord Mayor Nick Reece.
For more than 15 years, the Melbourne Derby has delivered moments that have shaped the Big Bash narrative — from Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels’ unforgettable confrontation at the MCG, to Adam Zampa’s attempted mankad that lit up the cricketing world.
The Melbourne Mace now gives these two clubs something to cherish, and the Stars General Manager Max Abbott believes it will provide a point of difference for these matches moving forward.
“The Derby is the biggest sporting club rivalry of the summer, and the Mace puts bragging rights on the line in a way that’s bold, loud and unmistakably BBL,” Abbott said.
“The presentation of the Mace will provide a moment for all our fans to enjoy as soon as the final ball has been bowled, in a unique celebration not seen anywhere else in world cricket.”
More than just a trophy, the Melbourne Mace is designed to elevate the city’s sporting divide, reinforcing the league-backed Choose Your Side call to action for fence-sitting Melburnians to get behind green or red.
In a city known for its tribal sporting culture, neutrality is no longer an option with each Melbourne Derby across the Weber WBBL and KFC BBL now carrying added significance.
The Melbourne Mace will be contested for the first time when the two sides meet at the MCG on 4 January, before a return bout at Marvel Stadium on 10 January.
To amplify the atmosphere on Derby nights, the Renegades and Stars have also introduced dedicated fan experiences at each fixture, designed in collaboration with Dan Gorringe. Fans can choose their side by buying into Gorringe-hosted Level 1 bays at the MCG, or accessing a private Dan Does Cricket bar experience at Marvel Stadium.
