2 more years for 2 young guns

Rising Stars Rhys McKenna and Sophie Day have put pen to paper on new 2-year deals with the Melbourne Stars.

McKenna has enjoyed a breakout tournament with the bat, highlighted by her 52 from just 22 deliveries at North Sydney Oval.

The 20-year-old and former Under 19 Australian Captain also has the ability to bowl, taking 3-18 against the Thunder in WBBL|09.

Day won the competition’s golden arm in WBBL|09, taking 27 wickets from 14 matches.

Day’s consistency has continued to shine through in WBBL|10 with 8 wickets from 9 games.

With 66 games to her name, Day received her maiden call up to the Australia A side earlier this year.

Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch was rapt to secure the signatures of both players.

“We’ve seen what both Sophie and Rhys can produce with bat and ball and despite a disappointing WBBL|10, we still have full faith that this group can return the Stars back to the finals.

“Rhys has taken her game to a new level and Sophie’s consistency has become a huge strength for her over the past two years.

“Despite being just 26 and 20, both have considerable experience under their belt in the WBBL and they are a key part of our group moving forward.”

“I feel like this group has a lot of unfinished business and hopefully we can keep the same core group of players who have come through together,” said Day.

“I’m thrilled to commit for the next two seasons and we will be putting everything into WBBL|11.”

“Obviously the season hasn’t turned out like we wanted it to but I’ve still got a lot of faith in this group,” said McKenna.

“We’ve got a lot of talented cricketers and we really feel like we can achieve something in the next couple of years.”
