Don’t tell Narissa Leung she ‘throws like a girl’.
“I get really frustrated when the female stereotype of how we throw and how we run is promoted,” she said.
“I definitely don’t throw like a weakling.”
Narissa, and daughter Ash, are among a group of women using Social Sixes as their sporting outlet.
Backed by Cricket Victoria and VicHealth, Social Sixes is a social cricket program designed just for women.
It allows participants to enjoy the health and social benefits of the sport without the pressure to win, join a club or spend significant dollars on equipment.
“Going into Social Sixes it was great just to have that environment where you’re encouraged to give everything a go and everyone is in the same boat as you,” Ash said.
Female cricket has never been more accessible.
With a growing number of competitions and the increased exposure the new television broadcast deal will provide, women don’t have to look too far for inspiration.
“The first thing it does is it puts that idea in my mind that ‘hey, maybe I could have a go at this, maybe I can have a go at this sport’,” Narissa said.
“I think that was the big difference for me when women’s cricket started being shown on the TV. That was the first time I’d actually thought ‘maybe I could play cricket’. I definitely think more women’s sport should be shown on TV to inspire other women to have a go at new sports.”
Rather than add another burden to their already busy weeks, Narissa and Ash see sport as helping to provide a better life balance.
“For some reason we think that women are always the ones who have to be at home and prioritizing other people over ourselves,” Narissa said.
“What I’ve discovered is the more ‘me time’ I quarantine, the better I am at my other roles.
“The more time I spend out running and enjoying time with other women doing sport, the better I am at being a mum, the better I am at being at work … I think everyone is better for it.”
If you would like to get involved visit the social sixes website (www.socialsixes.com.au).
