Stars return to the Latrobe Valley for BBL|09

09 September 2019

The Melbourne Stars will return to the Latrobe Valley this season with the club confirming it will host a BBL match in Moe in December.

The Stars today joined event partners Latrobe Valley Authority (LVA) and Latrobe City Council (LCC) to confirm the KFC Big Bash League fixture against the Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday December 22 at Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe.

The news follows the success of last year’s first BBL match at Moe in which the Stars claimed a 44-run win over the Adelaide Strikers in front of more than 6,000 avid cricket fans.

Stars Men’s Head Coach David Hussey said the match was a great opportunity to connect with the Latrobe Valley community and engage with even more Stars fans across Victoria.

“We’re very excited to be returning to the Latrobe Valley to play at Ted Summerton Reserve against the Hobart Hurricanes. Last year’s match was a great success and we loved seeing so many Stars fans come along to support,” David Hussey said.

“It’s really important for us to bring the Big Bash to regional Victoria. Sport has the power to bring people together and it’s important for us to give back to our Team Green community and thank them for their support. Hopefully we can inspire the next generation to play cricket.”

Last year’s match was a big-hitting affair as Ben Dunk and Marcus Stoinis both made half centuries as the Stars set a total of 167 runs.

December’s fixture promises more of the same and marks the third Stars event in the Gippsland region as part of a three-year partnership with the Victorian Government and LVA.

“This partnership has brought the excitement of the BBL and major sport right to our doorstep and we are thrilled the Stars will put Gippsland in the spotlight for another blockbuster game this December,” Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing MP said.

“We have worked closely with the Stars to deliver the big games as well as community programs for local clubs, players and volunteers.

“Best of all, we’ve engaged with thousands of young people across Gippsland – and we can’t wait to meet even more.”

LCC Mayor Cr Graeme Middlemiss said the game would enhance Latrobe Valley’s growing status as a major regional sporting powerhouse.

“Coming off the success of last year the return of Big Bash and the Melbourne Stars is highly anticipated in our community. Last year a large, enthusiastic crowd attended at Ted Summerton Reserve, Moe,” Cr Middlemiss said.

“The game highlighted that our region has a huge Melbourne Stars following with fans coming from all over Latrobe Valley to enjoy the action in Moe. I would like to thank the Melbourne Stars for their commitment to regional Victoria and helping to grow the next generation of cricketers.”

Principal partner Optus are once again pleased to be partnering with the Stars to take a game to regional Victoria.

“Optus are proud to support the youth of Gippsland to be fit, happy and healthy in a safe environment and are thrilled to have helped bring the BBL to the Latrobe Valley region once again,” Optus General Manager – Eastern Victoria, Jayson Grool said.

The Stars will take on the Hurricanes on Sunday, December 22 at Ted Summerton Reserve at 2.45 pm.

The match will be broadcast live on Channel 7. Tickets for the match go on sale today at
