Maxwell, who has previously captained Indian Premier League team Kings XI Punjab, joined the Stars in BBL|02 and has since played 37 matches for the Stars, accumulating 973 runs.

Speaking about his appointment, Maxwell said it was a privilege to have the opportunity to lead the Stars.

“It’s an honour to be named captain of the Melbourne Stars and I’m looking forward to working with Stephen Fleming on what is set to be another big season,” Maxwell said.

“We’re really lucky at the Stars to have such a welcoming, inclusive and relaxed environment. We’re a family and to be able to lead this group and continue to build on an already strong culture is really exciting.

“We’ve got a talented list which includes new signings so it’s going to be important for us to come together this week and get to know each other more both on and off the field.

Melbourne Stars CEO Clint Cooper said Maxwell embodied the Stars’ values and held the talents needed to help lead the Club in search of a Big Bash title.

“We think Glenn is a great leader both on and off the field and we’re really looking forward to seeing the direction he takes the Club,” Cooper said.

“As someone who lives and breathes cricket, we know that Glenn has a great cricket mind and tactically we’re excited to see what he brings to the team.”

The Melbourne Stars will begin their preparations for BBL08 this week, with an opening match in Canberra against the Thunder on December 21, and will host their first home match on New Year’s Day against the Renegades at the MCG.
