Melbourne Stars complete Dale Steyn coup

08 October 2019

Superstar South African fast bowler Dale Steyn will light up the BBL this summer after putting pen to paper with the Melbourne Stars for the upcoming season.

Steyn, who has played 44 T20 international matches and has featured in the Indian Premier League, will be available for the Stars’ first six matches, which includes the Melbourne Derby at the MCG.

As one of the most feared fast bowlers in the world, the South African brings a wealth of experience to the Stars’ bowling attack having represented his country more than 250 times across all formats.

Steyn said he was looking forward to making his BBL debut in green.

I’m very excited to join the Melbourne Stars and meet my new teammates and play in the Big Bash,” Steyn said.

“This is the first year where the cricket schedule gives me the opportunity to come down and enjoy everything Melbourne has to offer. It’s a great city and I’m looking forward to spending part of the Australian summer there.

“Having watched closely from afar, the BBL is a top tournament which has a great reputation overseas. I love cricket and want to make a difference in any team that I am playing for. I have had time to get fit and have been bowling for two months now. I can’t wait to get over there and get going.”

Steyn will be joined by fellow international signing Sandeep Lamichhane.

Stars List Manager Trent Woodhill said the addition of Steyn was a big boost for the club and the competition more broadly.

“We all know that Dale is a world-class talent and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the Stars this summer,” Woodhill said.

“To have someone of his calibre sign with the Stars is really exciting. His infectious personality and unparalleled competitiveness will be great for players and fans alike and we hope that all Melburnians get behind us this season to watch two of the most entertaining international signings in Dale and Sandeep.

“Combined with our spin bowling stocks, we believe the addition of Dale gives us one of the best bowling line-ups in the competition.”

The Melbourne Stars will open its BBL|09 campaign against the Brisbane Heat on December 20 at Metricon Stadium with the club’s first home match on December 22 at Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe.
