Meg Lanning to captain the Stars' inaugural WBBL team

10 July 2015

The Melbourne Stars has today announced that Australia Captain Meg Lanning has joined the Club as its first women’s Captain for the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League starting in December.

The Melbourne Stars has today announced that Australia Captain Meg Lanning has joined the Club as its first Captain for the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League starting in December.

Lanning is widely regarded as one of the world’s most talented female cricketers and a born leader, and was this year named Wisden’s inaugural Leading Women’s Cricketer in the World.

Commenting on her signing with the Melbourne Stars Meg Lanning said, “I’m really happy to be joining the Melbourne Stars. The Stars have a reputation as a really good Club and one that players are keen to be a part of.”

“I’m looking forward to putting together a team with a lot of variety, which is really important in the T20 format, and we’ll be looking to recruit some key strike bowlers and batters that have the ability to take the game away from the competition,” said Lanning.

Speaking on behalf of the Board, Melbourne Stars Chief Executive Clint Cooper said “The Club has fully embraced the opportunity to develop a Stars team to compete in the WBBL this summer. We are delighted to be able to secure a cricketer of Meg’s calibre, her appointment as Captain will help build a strong foundation for the women’s team and is a perfect fit for our Club.

“When we began building the men’s team in 2010 our goal was to develop a list of leaders with a mix of youth and experience. We’ve taken the same approach with the women’s team this year, starting with recruiting the world’s leading female cricketer and Australia captain. We’re looking forward to helping increase the profile of women’s cricket and showing young girls that they too can grow up to play for the Stars.”

The Stars’ announcement comes as Cricket Australia officially launched the WBBL schedule in Sydney, which will see the Stars play 14 matches over six weekends in December and January, including a Melbourne Derby at the MCG, televised live on Network Ten.

Local Melbourne Stars fans will have their first opportunity to support their women’s team when the Stars host the Brisbane Heat for the first match of the WBBL season at Junction Oval on Saturday 5 December.

Commenting on how she expects the Melbourne Stars fans to embrace the women’s team Meg Lanning said, “It’s going to be a really exciting atmosphere for the players, and the more fans we can get to the ground to help us along, the better it will be. The players are all really keen to interact so I think it’s going to be a great experience for the fans.”

“It’s exciting to be with the Stars, where there’s a real ‘one club’ mentality, and the fans are a big part of that, so it will be great to have their support this summer,” said Lanning.
