The Game at a Glance
Ellyse Perry won the toss as chose to bat, and the Stars wasted no time in sending the Sixers captain back to the dug-out. Perry was given out LBW, giving Nic Hancock her first wicket of the day, and is the second time in two matches Perry has been dismissed by Hancock. The wickets fell quickly and steadily for the Sixers after Alyssa Healy was caught in the deep for 35. It was clearly a day for the spinners, as 7 wickets were taken by spin bowlers. Both Alana King and Kristen Beams led the way for the Stars bowlers, and finished with figures of 3-13 and 3-11 respectively. Erin Osborne and Holly Ferling also took a wicket each.
The Stars got off to a shaky start, losing Lizelle Lee in the first over for no runs. Mignon du Preez followed shortly after, although she was given out LBW to a delivery that was later revealed to be missing the stumps. Ange Reakes picked up the pace with a quick-fire 22, but it was Erin Osborne and Annabel Sutherland who combined to see the Stars over the line for a win to wrap up our WBBL|04 season. Alana King was named Player of the Match for her incredible bowling effort.
With the Ball
Despite a great start from Allysa Healy, the Stars broke the opening partnership early. The dangerous Ellyse Perry was given out LBW off Nicola Hancock’s bowling, the same bowler who dismissed Perry in her first WBBL match in December 2018. Healy went on to make 35 before she too was dismissed, caught in the deep by Ange Reakes off Alana King. It was clearly a day for the spinners, as King set the pace early in the innings. She got 2 wickets in her first 2 overs, and finished with 3-13 off her four overs. Kristen Beams also shone, taking 2 wickets in her first over and finishing with the Stars best figures of 3-11. The Stars bowled the Sixers out for 92 off 19 overs, with 7 of the 10 wickets taken by spin bowlers.
With the Bat
The Stars got off to a shaky start, losing Lizelle Lee for a duck in the first over. Mignon du Preez stepped up to the crease but was dismissed LBW by Van Niekirk, however replays showed that the ball was missing leg stump. It was up to Ange Reakes and Katey Martin to steady the ship and Ange Reakes led the charge, scoring a quick-fire 22 before she was dismissed LBW. Martin and Osborne were left with a bit of work to do, and both batters stepped up to the mark. Katey Martin was unlucky to be caught in the deep on 15, but it was Erin Osborne and Annabel Sutherland who combined to score the winning runs. Osborne top-scored with 34 runs off 28 balls, smashing a four to see the Stars reach the target with 20 balls to spare.
