STARS SEAL THE WIN AS STRIKERS FALL SHORT

23 November 2021

In a fairy-tale finish for retiring veteran Erin Osborne, the Melbourne Stars secured their fifth win of WBBL|07 in their final match of the season over the Adelaide Strikers.

It was a victory built on determination, grit and strong performances from the Stars with opener Elyse Villani producing her maiden WBBL century, brought up with a spectacular six.

Villani’s ton was superbly supported from captain Meg Lanning (50) and Annabel Sutherland (27), who also had a day out with the ball taking two wickets.

Villani finishes the season with 439 runs, second only to Beth Mooney.

The Stars got to a fast start after the in-form Kim Garth knocked over van Niekerk (0) in the first over.

Irishwoman Garth completes her first season in green with an impressive 15 wickets and an economy rate of 6.24, the second best of the top ten wicket takers.

Former Star Katie Mack took to the Stars attack, contributing 89* whilst another former Star Maddie Penna added 56*, propelling the Strikers to fins with 3-175.

As the Stars closed in on the chase for victory, Elyse Villani stepped up and smacked a memorable six to seal an emphatic nine-wicket victory, pulling off the fourth highest successful chase in WBBL history.
