Melbourne Derby abandoned due to rain

Rain has dampened a positive start for the Melbourne Stars as bragging rights in the first Melbourne derby of WBBL|06 went to the weather gods.

In a rain-interrupted match against the Renegades at Hurstville Oval, umpires decided to abandon the fixture at 4.35pm as heavy rain continued to fall. The Stars were 4-127 after 17 overs.

Earlier, the Stars lost the delayed toss and were sent in to bat and were immediately forced to contend with the loss of Elyse Villani who fell LBW for a first ball duck.

Captain Meg Lanning, in her first appearance since returning to the Stars in the off-season, took charge of the innings, scoring 51* (50) and combined with Mignon Du Preez in her 50th game for the Stars, who made 32.

England star Nat Sciver, also returning to the Stars, saw the same fate as Villani with an inside edge onto the stumps to leave the Stars 3-70 in the tenth over.

Annabel Sutherland contributed some big hitting in a strong 31 from 23 before she was stumped by Josie Dooley and when the match was called Erin Osborne and Meg Lanning stood at the crease with 4-127 on the board.

The Stars next face the Sydney Thunder on Monday morning at North Sydney Oval.
