21 January 2017

The Melbourne Stars has suffered a four-wicket loss against the Hobart Hurricanes at Blundstone Arena today, knocking them out of finals contention.

Hobart Hurricanes 6-136 def. Melbourne Stars 8-135 by 4 wickets

Batting first in today’s must-win clash, Wes and the Skipper made their way to the middle to start our innings. Wes made a total of seven before she was sent on her way in the third over as our first wicket of the day, with Sciv the next to fall in the fifth over for four runs.

JC was next at the crease, putting on 16 before being caught out by Hunter in the tenth over. K-Mack came to the middle hoping to build a big partnership with the Skipper, but was run out for only seven runs five overs later.

Anna Lanning was the next to go in the 18th over with just six runs from her innings, with the Megastar falling one over later after her superb knock of 81 runs from 55 balls. Flem and Beamsy both fell in the last over for a total of five, with Kingy left at the crease on 3* and our total at 135.

We then took to the field to try and stop the Canes from overcoming our total, and it only took four overs for our breakthrough wicket with opener Burns caught behind by Wes off a ball from Beamsy.

Five overs later Kingy snagged our second wicket, with the Megastar catching fellow opener Redmayne for 18 runs. Beamsy then removed the danger wicket of Knight in the 12th over for her second of the day, following with Matthews for her third in the 18th over.

K-Mack made a fantastic run out in the 19th over, for Sciv to then take a wicket on the next ball, leaving the Hurricanes needing 12 runs off the last over. Unfortunately the girls in purple were able to get the runs needed and take the win.

The Moment

Anna Lanning took an absolute screamer of a catch today in the 12th over to remove the big danger wicket of Knight for 35 runs. With Beamsy in the middle of her over, she sent the ball down the pitch with Knight hitting it towards Lanning. Almost out of her reach, Lanning then launched her body sideways to take one of the best catches of the season to remove Knight. Absolutely brilliant!

The Player

What a knock from the Skipper today! The Megastar finished with a total of 81 from 55 balls, smashing nine fours and a six during her time at the crease. Leading from the front and lasting for almost our entire batting innings, Moira really made sure that we finished with a competitive total for a game we needed to win to make finals. The Megastar also passed a major milestone today – hitting her 19th run, she became the first player to surpass 1000 runs in the WBBL competition. What a feat for our absolute champion of a Skipper!
