Stars go down in tough loss to Thunder

31 October 2021

Two major contributions from Sydney Thunder’s batters was enough to see them overcome the Melbourne Stars on Saturday afternoon.

The Thunder completed a 19-run victory over the Stars on the back of 53 runs from opener Tahlia Wilson and 49 from Phoebe Litchfield.

The Thunder won the toss and elected to bat, determined to make the Stars work in the run chase.

The Stars tasted early success with the ball through the in-form Kim Garth who had the dangerous Smriti Mandhana caught at Mid-On by Annabel Sutherland.

Wickets dried up for the Stars after that and it wasn’t until the 14th over that Erin Osborne finally removed Litchfield from her damaging partnership with McGrath.

Set 134 for victory, Elyse Villani continued her strong form at the top with 38 but she was short of partners to get the chase moving.

English import Maia Bouchier (20) and Tess Flintoff (17) fought a middle order response, but it was not enough to stop the Thunder winning by 19 runs.

The Stars are back in action on Sunday against the Brisbane Heat, live on Channel 7.
