Stars fall short in Melbourne Derby

07 November 2021

A resounding all-round performance from the Melbourne Renegades proved too good for the Melbourne Stars in the Melbourne Derby at the Adelaide Oval.

Having won their past two matches, the Stars entered the clash confident, winning the bat flip and electing to bat first.

Elyse Villani (1), Annabel Sutherland (9) and captain Meg Lanning (17) all fell early to leave Team Green in serious trouble.

The Renegades’ spin duo of skipper Sophie Molineux (2-10) and Harmanpreet Kaur (3-22) proved lethal, putting the pressure on early allowing the Renegades faster bowlers to restrict their rivals.

Despite some lusty blows from Kim Garth (32) and a mature knock from Erin Osborne (29), the Stars could finished 103 all out off their 20 overs.

Needing early wickets, Tess Flintoff struck gold in the second over when she bowled opener Eve Jones for a duck. But it only started an enterprising partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues (45) and Carly Leeson (41) that killed the contest.

The Stars bowlers toiled hard in trying to defend the low total, with Kim Garth capping off another brilliant all-round display with two late wickets.

Melbourne Renegades 3-104 (14.1) defeated Melbourne Stars 103 all out.
