Stars blown away by Hurricanes

19 October 2021

An inspired century from Hobart Hurricanes captain Rachel Priest proved too good for the Melbourne Stars at Blundstone Arena on Tuesday.

With both sides seeking their first win of WBBL|07, it was the Hurricanes who took the upper hand.

Under cloudy skies, the Hurricanes set 153 runs for victory and the Stars were dismissed for 89.

The Stars won the bat flip and sent the local side in to bat first, but it was Priest who was unstoppable at the top of the order.

The 36 year-old New Zealander finished the innings on 107* off just 68 deliveries, with 10 fours and 7 sixes.

For the Stars bowlers, England debutant Linsey Smith claimed her first scalp in green with the wicket of Ruth Johnston in the fourth over and Annabel Sutherland finished with 2-22 from her four overs.

Trouble arrived early in the Stars’ run chase when Molly Strano dismissed Elyse Villani for a second ball duck and Annabel Sutherland fell shortly after.

Skipper Meg Lanning put up a valiant 25 (28) to try and get the scoreboard ticking but wickets continued to fall cheaply for the Stars as the Hurricanes exerted their dominance over the contest.

The Stars will be looking to make amends when they return to action against the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday afternoon at Blundstone Arena.
