Short leads Hurricanes to victory

14 January 2019

An unbeaten 96 from D'Arcy Short has delivered the Hurricanes a 59 run win over the Stars at the MCG tonight.

The Game at a Glance
Stars skipper Nic Maddinson won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Stars did well during the powerplay to restrict the Hurricanes to 40 runs. Jackson Bird led the way, bowling three of the six powerplay overs and only conceding 15 runs. Tom O’Connell broke the opening partnership and simultaneously got his first BBL wicket when he sent Matthew Wade back to the dug-out for 41 off 38. Liam Bowe struck next, removing Doran by catching his own bowling.

D’Arcy Short proved to be too strong for the Stars’ bowling attack finishing unbeaten on 96 to put the game out of reach from the Stars.

With the Ball
The Stars did well to restrict the Hurricanes during the powerplay. Jackson Bird was particularly impressive, bowling half the powerplay overs and only conceding 15 runs. The Hurricanes pulled away in the middle overs, until the debutant Tom O’Connell got the breakthrough and his first wicket in the Big Bash League, combining with Ben Dunk who took a spectacular catch on the boundary. D’Arcy Short took the challenge to the Stars, and top-scored with an unbeaten 96.

With the Bat

The Stars got off to a shaky start losing early wickets to slump to 4-51 in the eighth over. Seb Gotch top scored on 35 off 26 before being dismissed by Archer in the 15th over. The next best was Ben Dunk with 20 off 15. The Stars finished their innings all out for 126 with the Hurricanes taking a 59 run win.
