Heat too good for Stars

02 January 2018

The Melbourne Stars have suffered a nine wicket loss against the Brisbane Heat.

Despite a half-century from Glenn Maxwell, the Brisbane Heat were too good for the Stars with opener Brendon McCullum and Chris Lynn steering the team to victory.

Brisbane Heat legspin duo Mitchell Swepson and Yasir Shah set up the win, combining to restrict the Stars to 7-141.

Swepson took 3-14 off four overs, including the key scalp of Kevin Pietersen, after the Heat won the toss and elected to bowl.

The 24-year-old frustrated the Stars' batsmen with his variations of pace, tempting Luke Wright (19) into a wild attempted slog which had him easily stumped.

Pietersen (30) looked in good touch on return from a one-game break before being caught at long on off a well-flighted Swepson delivery.

Pakistan legspinner Yasir took 1-16 off four overs and was unlucky to have an lbw appeal against Rob Quiney turned down.

Glenn Maxwell fought a lone hand for the Stars with a composed 50 off 39 balls.

In reply, Liam Bowe took the Stars' sole wicket, with McCullum caught in the deep for 61.

The Stars will next face the Renegades in the Derby on Saturday.
