Long regarded as a leader and club stalwart for the Stars, Hastings takes the reins from David Hussey who retired at the end of BBL|06.
Having been with the club since its inception, Hastings is the Stars’ all-time leading wicket-taker, claiming 40 wickets across 28 matches.
Hastings has also featured in several memorable cameo batting performances including playing the support role to Peter Handscomb (103*) when he smashed 20 off six balls to help steer the Stars to victory
Hastings said that he was elated to be selected as captain and looked forward to the summer ahead.
“I’m very honoured to be the captain of the Melbourne Stars. We have a great Club and I can’t wait to pull the green shirt back on this summer and lead the team,” Hastings said.
“Our squad is very close and we have built a great culture at the Club. I’m especially looking forward to building on it and strengthening it with Stephen Fleming and the coaching panel.”
Stars Chief Executive Clint Cooper said that he was excited to see the next chapter of the Club unfold under Hastings’ leadership.
“John is not only an outstanding cricketer but an even better person who exudes the characteristics of loyalty, selflessness and commitment to the team,” Cooper said.
“Filling the shoes of previous club captains is certainly an enviable challenge which we know John will thrive at and bring his own style and personality to it.”
The Stars will open their BBL|07 campaign against the Brisbane Heat on December 20 at the Gabba.
