Beams, who has signed a new multi-year deal with the Stars, has played with the Club since the inception of the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League, claiming 25 wickets in 14 matches including best figures of 4-11.
Commenting on her appointment, Beams, 32, said:
“I’m very honoured to be named captain of the Melbourne Stars. I can’t wait for the team to come together this summer and to create a culture that we can all be proud of,” Beams said.
“To also sign a three-year deal with the Stars is very exciting as it means that I’m going to be a one-club player. That’s something special to me.”
In further good news for the Club, the Stars has also unveiled the bulk of their WBBL|03 squad with South African international Mignon du Preez returning to the Club and new additions South African compatriot Lizelle Lee and England’s Georgia Elwiss joining.
Having spent the last two seasons at the Sydney Thunder, off-spinner Erin Osborne has also signed with the Stars, bolstering the squad’s bowling line-up.
“I played under the captaincy of Georgia at the Loughborough Lightning. She was a part of England’s World Cup winning squad earlier this year and will bring depth to our bowling and batting line-ups,” Beams said.
“Erin is one of Australia’s best off-spinners. I’m very much looking forward to playing alongside her again.”
Stars Head Coach David Hemp said that he was looking forward to the season ahead and that it was good to have a mixture of new and returning faces in the squad.
“We’re really excited to welcome Mignon back to the Club. She was great to have around the team in season one and will slot in nicely in our middle order,” Hemp said.
“We saw what Lizelle can do at the top order at this year’s Women’s World Cup. She’s a big hitter and will take the gloves this season.
“We’ve also secured Victorian Nicole Faltum who is a young and upcoming talent so we are really excited.”
Katie Mack, Emma Kearney, Gemma Triscari, Alana King, Anna Lanning, Hayleigh Brennan and Makinley Blows have all re-committed to Stars and will return for their third seasons with the Club.
“To have all seven members return, eight when you include Kristen, means that we can start to shape the squad for years to come,” Hemp said.
With 13 signings being announced by the Stars today, the Club now only has two more spots available.
The Melbourne Stars will open its WBBL|03 campaign against the Sydney Sixers on December 9 at North Sydney Oval.
The team will play three double-headers at the MCG, with the first being the Derby double-header on Saturday, 6 January 2018.
